First Miles

Finally embarking on the journey of a lifetime. This is a trip I've known I've wanted to do for a few years and finally with COVID behind us and border open, there is no better time than now. After severely under prepping myself both physically and mentally, I decided to quit my job and hit the road.

Montana Pt. 1

The first border crossing of the trip. Even though it was a border into my own country, it was still exciting. I was starting to get into my grove again. I was adapting to the bike travel life and loving it.

Montana Pt. 2 – Idaho

The difficulty of the Great Divide route along with my fresh legs was starting to get to me. I was starting to hop on and hop off the route as I felt. That is how I prefer to ride, though. I'm held by no route.

Bikepacking Utah

One of my favorite states I've ridden so far. Utah is a magical state with an immensely diverse landscape. That along with the many beautiful Natural Parks and free camping on BLM land, made it a great state to bike.

Arizona

I would only dip my toes in Arizona but it was for a special reason. I've always wanted to see the Grand Canyon. I was a bit hesitant because it's more of an amusement park with the tourists, but it would turn out to be worth it.

California

In Southern California I would start experiencing some real desert riding. I was scared at first but I learned that I would adapt pretty quickly as my expectations changed. The heat and sand became easier and I was feeling stronger

Baja Norte

Mexico. To me, this is where the real adventure starts. I had already ridden through The States before and wanted something new and challenging. A new country, a new language, and a whole new world would wait for me immediately after the border.

Baja California had already blown my expectations out of the water and the southern state would only get better. The vast beauty and remoteness of Baja made it a dream for bikepacking.

Sailing the Gulf of California

Sailing had been a dream of mine the past few years. It shares a lot of similarities with biking in my mind. Biking gives me freedom of the land and sailing gives me freedom of the seas. I luckily found myself around the right people and wound up finding a great crew to cross the gulf with.

Mental Hills

Bike travel comes with many challenges. The most obvious is the physical nature of bicycling everyday and enduring all kinds of weather. The mental side was a tougher one and one that I would soon get to meet.

Coastal Coasting

With the stress of a timeline behind me, I really enjoyed the Pacific coast of Mexico. Beautiful beaches everywhere and fantastic weather everyday. Some days I would go 15 miles and some days I would go 80. But everyday I was in heaven.

Motorcycle Diaries

A bicycle is a great way to travel but sometimes having a little extra horsepower doesn't hurt, along with the company of a great friend. I've been riding dirt bikes since I was a kid and I've always loved them. I was very close to doing this entire trip on one, but I'm very glad I picked a bicycle. A motorcycle sure is fun every here and there, though.

Trans Mexico Sur

After some coastal riding I was itching for some mountains again. The Trans Mex Sur route was a fantastic route through the southern mountains of Mexico. It was extremely challenging with extreme heat, but thankfully I had some good friends riding with me most of the time.

Land of Hills

It was pretty hard to leave Mexico behind. It was a beautiful country with incredible food and extremely kind people. In Guatemala things would be similar but more extreme. The culture was stronger, the towns were busier, and the hills were much steeper.

Hiking Lake Atitlán Volcanoes

Since I have been in Santa Cruz working, I spent more time each day admiring the three beautiful volcanoes across from me: Atitlan, Toliman, and San Pedro. I had already climbed one volcano in Guatemala, and I knew I needed to climb these as well. This blog contains two trips: the first is an epic three-day hike to Atitlan and Toliman, and the second is a quick day hike up San Pedro.

Hiking Volcano Tajumulco

Volcano Tajumulco is the tallest volcano and point in all of Central America, standing at 4203m (13659ft). Argo and I had been wanting to climb this one for a while and when a new volunteer, Kirk, came along, we decided it was finally had a good crew to do it with.

La Iguana Perdida

One of my goals on this trip was finding somewhere to volunteer. I had heard many amazing experiences from friends who had done something similar. I landed a spot at a beautiful hostel on a lake in Guatemala after becoming friends with Joy, a manager at the hostel. I had planned to volunteer for 6 weeks but that turned into nearly 5 months as I loved it here and became a manager.

Continuation of a Journey

After two months back in the States, I was more than ready to get back to Guatemala and finally continue my journey south. I had been dreaming of the biking life for a while. I wanted to go back to the daily adventure with the excitement of not knowing what lays ahead. To push my body and my mind further and further each day.

Kayaking Panama to Colombia – Part 2

Kacper and I enter the territoriiy of Guna Yala and the San Blas Islands. This was the region we had been dreaming of paddling through. Islands as far as the eye can see, endless reefs full of sea life, and as many coconuts as you can open. While it was this remote island life we were dreaming of, the true surprise of this section would be the Guna people we would meet.

Motorcycling Around Peru’s Cordillera Blanca

Since Paula and I met in Bogota, we haven't gone a day without talking to each other. Badly wanting to see each other again, we planned a trip to travel around Cordillera Blanca in Peru for a week. Overcoming Mountains in Peru

The time had finally come to start the Peru Great Divide. I took a popular alternative near the beginning to take me to a town near Huayuash National Park where I wanted to hike for a few days. I start on the final section of Peru with a great mentality, ready to push myself and inch my way across the country towards Bolivia. After biking for nearly a week straight, one of my worst nightmares happened in a small town, forcing me to retreat to a city to recover. Finally ready to leave again, the world has other plans and I end up stuck again for weeks.

Bikpacking Bolivias Altiplano

After months of setbacks, all I wanted to do was begin biking across Bolivia. Bolivia is well known to cyclists, as it is home to a few iconic bicycle touring landmarks. The Salar de Uyuni and the Laguans route are two iconic bike tourer destinations I had been dreaming about for years; I just needed to heal before I could begin.

Hike A Biking Paso El Bolson

The night before Zach and I left El Bolson, we were still discussing which route we were going to take to Chile. I wanted to take a hiking trail that would take us near the start of the Carretera Austral, but Zach wanted to bike much further south and cross later. I knew the hiking trail would be a greater, but more rewarding challenge. After enough convincing, Zach agreed.

Gloomy Beginning to the Carretera Austral

The Carretera Austral, or Southern Highway, is a renowned highway in Chilean Patagonia that was first opened to the public in 1988. As one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of its time, the road was designed to connect remote southern territories with the rest of Chile. Its construction posed significant challenges, navigating through thick forests, expansive fjords, lakes, rivers, and beneath massive glaciers. However, this difficult terrain contributes to the highway's reputation as one of the most beautiful in the world. Travelers from across the globe come to explore the road by car, motorcycle, bicycle, and even as hitchhikers.…

Hike a Biking Lago Del Desierto

This border crossing is iconic for people cycling South America for reasons of wild beauty, adventure, and necessity. It is the only way for cyclists to continue from the end of the Carretera Austral or to get to it for the rare people riding north. I will be telling my experience as a southern rider. This will be a shorter blog, as it's focused on providing information about my experience crossing this border, in the hope that it will be a valuable resource to future cyclists looking to take on the challenging hike a bike.

The Final Diversions

After finishing the Carretera Austral, Ushuaia felt closer than ever before. In a brief moment of misjudgment, I almost ignored all that was around me, with an intense focus on arriving in Ushuaia as fast as possible. For over two years, I have been saying I was biking to Ushuaia. I remember how crazy it felt in the beginning, I hardly believed it myself and sometimes kept it to myself when talking about my trip. I had to keep my mind focused on the goals right in front of me, such as the next city or where I was sleeping that night. Day by day, week by week, I slowly worked my way south until now, Ushuaia was the next goal.
